So what does it have in it? We've got Tempest, Missile Command, Super breakout, Asteroids, Centipede, PONG (oh yes Pong), Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, Warlords, some Atari Classics inspired Windows themes and loads of videos about the birth of Atari (if that's your kind of thing).
So let's take a factual ride through the games...
Tempest (1980). A tube shooter, the first of it's type, Tempest used a tube to create a 3D look. This was accompanied by lots of "the graphics are just out of this space, man!!" at the time.
Missile Command (1980). Most well known by the younger generation as being "that game that that kid was playing in Terminator 2". The highest ever score was set in 1983 at 80 000 000 points.
Super Breakout (1978). Super Breakout was one of the first games to use a microprocessor.
Asteroids (1979). One of the most influential of the golden age of gaming. A bloke in the US recently played it for 27 hours straight (when he had to stop because his machine broke).
Centipede (1981). Centipede was not only one of the first vertical shoot 'em ups, it was also the first game designed by a woman; Mrs Donna Bailey.
Pong (1972). The first video game with widespread popularity, Pong was recently converted to be controlled by thought at the 2006 Cebit trade fair in Germany.
Asteroids Deluxe (1980). The deluxe version removed the hyperspace power and instead gave the player a shield. It also changed a few things to prevent experienced players from cheating.
Battlezone (1980). The first 3D (and first person 3D game), Battlezone was also redesigned for use by the US army to train tank gunners.
Crystal Castles (1983). An isometric version of Pacman, it seems to be the first game that you could 'finish'.
Gravitar (1982), Gravitar was the first 'Hard-Core Gamer' game as it was too difficult for normal people in the arcades.
Millipede (1982). Millipede is a harder version of Centipede and as such features the super weapon the DDT bomb. DDT is an insecticide that is now illegal.
Walords (1981). Warlords was one of the first four player games.
Thank you for following this Metaboli trip through facts on the golden age of gaming, and enjoy your retro gaming.
